The discipline of engineering signals so that AI engines reconstruct answers that name your firm.
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the deliberate engineering of digital signals — citations, structured data, content depth, entity clarity, reputation substance — such that AI search engines, when synthesizing an answer to a consumer query, include a specific business by name. AEO is the marketing discipline corresponding to retrieval-based generative search the way SEO corresponded to crawl-based ranked search.
The term emerged in 2023 as generative answer engines began cannibalizing classical search traffic. By 2026 it is the prevailing practice for any service business whose consumer journey includes a "find me a [profession]" query — law, medicine, financial advice, home services.
SEO ranks pages in a result list. AEO produces named entity appearances inside prose answers. The mechanics diverge:
Across the dataset described in the methodology, the correlation between Google ranking and AI engine appearance is approximately 0.076 percent. Strong SEO does not produce AEO. Both disciplines must be funded separately.
AEO is not a single tactic. It is the engineering of five distinct signal layers, addressing the five different ways AI engines build answers. These layers are detailed in signal stack. They are: citation engineering, structured data, entity establishment, topical depth, and reputation surface.
